8 Cancer Signs Women Often Ignore

According to current research studies, women are more vigilant than men when it comes to health checkups and recommended cancer screenings. But this isn’t always the case. Younger women often ignore potential cancer symptoms as they are clouded by the notion that “cancer is only for the elderly people”. And they are often right but even the younger people get cancer too.

More often than not, younger women tend to dismiss subtle symptoms which can help detect and treat cancer at its early stage. Make sure you are aware of these common overlooked signs that may warrant medical attention on your part. Having these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean that cancer is present in the body. Here are some of the most common signs and symptoms that most women ignore.

  • Unexplained weight loss. A lot of women would be happy to experience weight reduction without even sweating it out. But a ten pound weight loss without an increase in physical activity or decrease food intake is pretty alarming. Unexplained weight loss can be a sign of cancer unless disproven. It can also be an overactive thyroid.
  • Bloating. Bloating is pretty common that other women just try to live with it. But this can also be a sign of ovarian cancer. This type of malignancy may also manifest symptoms such as pelvic pain, abdominal pain, and getting full easily. If the bloating happens daily and continues for the next few weeks, consult your health care provider right away.
  • Unusual or irregular bleeding. Most premenopausal women ignore in between period menses. They often ignore GI tract bleeding as well, thinking that it is from their period. In between period menses and bleeding after menopause may be symptoms of endometrial cancer. Colorectal cancer can cause GI bleeding.
  • Unusual breast changes. Girls know their breast very well, even without doing self exams monthly to feel for lumps. But this isn’t the only sign that can point to breast cancer. Thickening and redness of breast skin are signs of inflammatory breast cancer.
  • Difficulty in swallowing. If you are experiencing difficulty in swallowing, you may have modified your diet or perhaps started on protein shakes and liquid foods. But this can be a sign of oesophageal cancer.
  • Skin changes. Most people are aware that mole changes can be symptoms of skin cancer. Aside from that, people must also watch for unusual skin pigmentations, excessive scaling or bleeding on skin.
  • Indigestion. Women who already gave birth often think that indigestion comes with pregnancy related weight gain. But when this happens for no obvious reason, then this could be a red flag. It may be an early sign of stomach or oesophageal cancer.
  • Enlargement of the lymph nodes. Lymph nodes usually swell during an infection. But if it swells for more than a month, then seek medical consult right away.

Early detection and treatment increases the chances for cancer survival. There are acute infections or diseases that may have the same symptoms. Consulting your doctor about these symptoms can miraculously save your life today.
