Thus some women tend to opt for natural breast enlargements, in the belief that anything natural cannot cause much harm. Natural breast enlargements can come in the form of regular breast massage, in the hope that anything that is massaged will, over time, enlarge naturally. Many women find that massage of the breasts on a regular basis does improve the look, firmness and the size of the breasts. The very sensuousness of the massage process itself makes this a very popular breast enlargement technique. It helps, of course, that women who want their breasts to look bigger tend to unconsciously stand erect with their chests thrown out and shoulders pulled back. One of the advantages of breast massage is also that it is supposed to help drain toxins and fluid away from the breasts and in this way help promote the growth of bigger and healthier breasts.

Other women will stick to herbal treatments which are purported to stimulate the growth of breast tissues. It is possible that these herbs do contain some naturally occurring estrogens that do stimulate breast growth.

Breast implant devices are of two varieties, saline breast implants (approved by the FDA in 2000) and silicone breast implants.  Both are equally useful.  However silicone devices have had a chequered history. They were first approved for use by the FDA in 1963, banned in 1992 on the grounds that it could be risky for health and later reapproved by the FDA in 2006. Silicone implants are generally the more popular, as they were more natural in feel and looks and the implant has the same texture as natural breast tissue. 

Saline implants stand the same chance of rupture as silicone implants.  However if saline implants rupture, the saline just dissipates into the body without any harm, and the implant deflates quite obviously.

If silicone implants rupture, the breast still looks and feels the same as the gel leaks into the surrounding tissues without any difference. However it is suspected that the leaked silicone has been responsible for the development of autoimmune disease.

Both saline and silicone implants carry the same risks of infection, pain, and capsular contracture.  The cost of breast implants, however, will vary depending on the type.  Similarly the implants may need to be replaced with age.

Always ensure you have the advice and treatment of a qualified doctor, as the world is never short of quacks who can give you cheap advice and dubious non-sterile treatment that can leave you permanently ill and looking worse than you did before treatment.

Surgical breast augmentation is of two varieties:

1.  Injection of fillers to boost the volume of your breasts.  EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.  The first few fillers were silicone based, and as we know now, this silicone causes the formation of inflammatory lumps in the breasts, some so bad that surgery is needed to remove them, and some patients even had to have their breasts removed, and if on injection the liquid silicon gets into the vessels draining the breasts and plugs into the lungs, causing a life threatening condition known as pulmonary embolism.

2.  Insertion of saline-filled or silicone-filled implants.  This is a much better option, and is the procedure of choice.  The bags are usually silicone rubber walled, tough enough to withstand considerable pressure.  Silicone-filled implants are more acceptable esthetically as they have a more natural look and feel as silicone has the same texture as natural breast tissue.  Saline implants are considered safer as there is no body reaction to the saline in the rare cases of rupture or leakage of the bag.

Generally the procedure is simple, at least in theory.  Under general or local anesthesia, an incision is made under the breast, or the armpit, or around the margin of the areola (the dark circle around your nipple) – these being the areas which produce the least visible scars.  The implant is then placed in between the breast tissue and the chest wall muscle, or under the chest wall muscle.  The operation may take between one to two hours.  You may be warded for a day or so (some centres do this on an outpatient basis, which means you go home after the surgeon is sure you have recovered from the anesthesia).  You are expected to rest for one week, after which stitches are removed.  Exercise is permissible after three weeks.  Scars that form will gradually fade off.
